Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation (WWAC), representing Wamba Wemba Traditional Owners of Country in north-western Victoria, have completed their first formal step of their treaty journey.

On 28 August 2026, Wamba Wemba was entered on the Treaty Authority’s Negotiations Register, which represents a Traditional Owner Group’s intention to begin preparations for treaty-making with the State of Victoria.

This entry on the Negotiations Register marks the eighth Traditional Owner Group to have completed Minimum Standards. WWAC is now making formal progress towards treaty-making.

The Negotiations Register is a publicly accessible site where information about Victorian treaties is held including which Traditional Owner Groups are progressing treaty plans, the status of negotiations and the Country they will cover.

The Negotiations Register is managed by the Treaty Authority, the independent body overseeing and facilitating treaty-making in Victoria.

Wamba Wemba describes their Traditional Country as spanning the north-west of Victoria and the south-west of New South Wales, extending across the Murray River and encompassing the lands, waters and cultural landscapes that have sustained Wamba Wemba People for countless generations.

Duean White, Biripi woman and Treaty Authority Member, said:

“The Treaty Authority acknowledges the significance of Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation’s entry onto the Negotiations Register and we congratulate them on achieving their latest milestone.

Treaties are about self-determination and equity.”

Andrew Morgan Jackomos PSM, Yorta Yorta man and Treaty Authority Member, said:

“Congratulations to Wamba Wemba Aboriginal Corporation for completing this step on their treaty journey.

We encourage Traditional Owners interested in pursuing treaty to reach out to the Treaty Authority for more information and support.”
